Bomarzo: Grove of the Monsters
Bomarzo's screaming face is perhaps its best known icon. |
Antonio edged his way through the bushes. He wasn't scared, he told himself. He was ten now. Almost a man. The other boys were just trying to frighten him with their stories of monsters hidden in these woods. There was really nothing here. He had to admit to himself that the place was spooky. It looked like it might have been a garden in times past, but it hadn't been taken care of in decades, maybe even centuries. Even so, there was nothing to be afraid of. This was 1905. Twentieth century Italy. Nobody believed in monsters anymore.
Suddenly Antonio found himself standing in front of an enormous shape. At first he thought it was a rock, but the lines were too regular. He stepped back a bit and then saw it. An eye glaring at him. Suddenly he realized that he was staring at the face of a huge dragon, its jaws open and ready to devour him. Antonio turned and ran and ran and ran. He was out of the grove in less than a minute, never to return.

Bhangarh Fort - The Most Haunted Place Of India
ABOUT BHANGARH:
Bhangarh (भानगढ़) is a village in India that is famous for its historical ruins. It is in the Rajgarh municipality of the Alwar district in the state of Rajasthan. Bhangarh is at the edge of the "Sariska Tiger Reserve". The modern village has a population of 1,306 in 200 households. Bhangarh is also a popular tourist attraction.
MYTH:
The Princess of Bhangarh, Ratnavati. She was believed to be the jewel of Rajasthan. On her 18th birthday she began to get offers of marriage from other regions (i.e. nobility). In Bhangarh lived a wizard, a magician well versed in the occult, called Sindhu Sevda, who was in love with the princess but knew that the match was impossible. One day Sindhu Sevda saw the princess's maid in the market and used his black magic on the scent she was purchasing so that upon touching it the princess would surrender herself to him. The princess, however, seeing the wizard enchanting the scent, foiled his plan by pouring it on boulder which crushed Sindhu Sevda. Dying, the wizard cursed the palace with the death of all who dwelt in it. The next year there was a battle between Bhangarh and Ajabgarh in which Princess Ratnavati perished. Legends says that there are ghosts of Sindhu Sevda and other locals in Bhangarh Fort and that is why entry is prohibited for tourists in the fort after sunset and before sunrise. The locals believe that the princess Ratnavati has taken birth somewhere else and that the fort and the empire of Bhangarh is waiting for her return to put an end to the curse.
